The airplane mode of THE BOX, our intelligent, secure and reusable packaging, is now approved by Etihad Airways, one of the world's leading airlines. This airplane mode, which required the development of two specific algorithms by our teams, makes it possible to avoid THE BOX and its functionality of tracking in real time interfering with the communication networks specific to the plane during its flight.
To obtain this certification, THE BOX had to comply with various standards and regulations initiated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and its American equivalent. This functionality called "Flight Mode" must allow the suspension of cellular communications (2G/3G/4G/5G) of connected objects, the time of a flight.
"This approval opens new perspectives for the use of THE BOX and gives it an international dimension. We have begun to apply for certification from the world's leading airlines. We hope that THE BOX will soon be able to board the planes of the biggest players in the airline industry", explains Denis Mourrain, CEO of LivingPackets France.
To be approved by Etihad Airways, we had to develop two algorithms using THE BOX sensors and allowing the automatic suspension of communication processes when flight is detected. For this purpose, numerous tests were carried out to identify measurements characteristic of airplane flights: acceleration at takeoff and in flight, pressure in the cargo hold, temperature, position, etc. Radio frequency measurements were also carried out in the laboratory and confirmed that THE BOX does not generate any disturbing emissions. A series of tests and verifications were then carried out in flight to ensure the proper functioning of the algorithms in real conditions.
"Following a rigorous approval process in which Etihad reviewed the functionality and capabilities of LivingPackets' THE BOX flight mode, the carrier has approved its use on its flights. Etihad Cargo will continue to explore solutions that make it easier for our customers to move cargo safely, so that we can remain their air cargo partner of choice," commented Thomas Schürmann, Head of Cargo Operations and Delivery, Etihad Cargo.
